Nursing4n00b’s how-to guide for making your own Professional Portfolio
For a lot of nursing students, interview season is just around the corner. Whether you’re applying for summer internships or sitting for the boards in December, it’s time to get ready. When I walk into an interview, I may not be prepared for some of the unpredictable questions but I know at least I have my tangible shit together thanks to an idea I got from one of my professors - a professional portfolio. Here’s what it contains:
- I have the portfolio in a slim white binder and everything is stored in plastic three-hole punch sleeves.
- Cover page (seen in the image) with a cute piece of nurse-related stock photo/clip art
- Several copies of my resume (sometimes there are multiple interviewers)
- A color photocopy of my diploma (I used to have black and white but color just looks so much classier, and this portfolio is the epitome of classy)
- A color photocopy of my license
- A color photocopy of my registration certificate (which came with my license)
- An unofficial transcript (aka an official transcript that I opened cause I was real curious to see what it looked like)
- An official transcript
- A color photocopy of my CPR/AED card
- Any nursing-related awards or special recognitions you’ve received
- Certificates from continuing education programs I participated in throughout school
- A summary of anything nursing-related you mention on your resume. For me, this includes my ”big important project” from senior year (most BSN programs probably have some variation of this). It could also include responsibilities or special skills you acquired at a past internship, any research projects you’ve participated in, committees you’ve sat on, etc.
- Finally, several copies of my list of references with contact info - a former preceptor, a clinical instructor, and former employers.
“I was very well educated. My dad paid me to go to a very good school but, you know, when my parents divorced, we didn’t have any money for a while. My birthday present was my school uniform and my pencil cases. I think that’s one of the reason why my education means so much to me. It’s because my dad really couldn’t afford to send me to this school. At the time we just didn’t have the money. And so I worked hard every single day that I was at that school to make him proud of me and for him to know that I appreciated it. And I do, and I still do.”
